The ELF convention went well and I bought several new autographs at the show. To read how I got them, please see the ELF: A Weekend Of Wonder Convention Review below. I added two Sean Astin autograph scans in the Lord Of The Rings Autographs page, one John Rhys-Davies in both the James Bond and Lord Of The Rings Autograph pages, three Elijah Wood autographs in the Lord Of The Rings and Sin City Autograph pages, one Matt Appleton in the Lord Of The Rings Autographs page. I also added autograph scans of Geoffrey Holder in the James Bond Autographs page, Clive Owen along with a Frank Miller I forgot to scan in earlier in the Sin City Autographs page, Orlando Bloom in the Lord Of The Rings Autographs page, Emilie de Ravin, Mira Furlan and Jorge Garcia autograph scans were added in the newly created LOST Autographs page. Mira Furlan was also added to the Spider-Man Animated Series Autographs page along with Nichelle Nichols and George Takei. Finally, I added Ted Raimi in the Evil Dead/ Army Of Darkness Autographs page.
ELF: A WEEKEND OF WONDER CONVENTION REVIEW
This past week I went with my parents, my sister and her boyfriend to Orlando, Florida. My dad and I went to the Lord Of The Rings convention "ELF: A Weekend Of Wonder" which was being run by Creation Entertainment. In the actual hall itself, there were a little less than 800 seats, so I guess that shows how small this conevntion was compared to others that I have attended in the past. I would also say that men had to be outnumbered 10:1 by women, which was intertesting to see! This is the most disappointing convention that I have been to regarding dealers. Creation took up half the dealer room and besides them, there were only seven other dealers! I believe all but three of those were not people like the jeweler or the artist guests. This kind of turned off several people from spending money because there was not a wide variety of items for sale and the only trading cards at the show were a few promos for sale and one box of Two Towers Topps cards.
Friday: Friday was the deadest day at the show because John Rhys-Davies who was originally suppose to be there on Friday was moved to Saturday, so the only person I went there for was Matt Appleton. He works for WETA and was the elf Saelbeth in Fellowship Of The Ring. I was lucky enough to get Mat Appleton to sign all three of my Saelbeth cards on Friday for free. My dad actually spotted him during a trivia contest which was occurring on the main stage and he was standing against a wall in the audience watching it. He was nice and smiled when I showed him the cards and he signed them all and also pose for a picturewith me too. I am glad I got him then because I hardly saw him any other time during the weekend and he never did an official signing. After the trivia contest (which were a joke with one answer eliminations and everyone in them was cheating by looking at each other's answers when they were not suppose to), I then attended a talk of his which was nice, although he has a very strong New Zealand accent.
On Friday I also bought a few unsigned photos, which is terrible. We were paying $60 an autograph in addition to the $349 package we both had and they still would not give us a complimentary photo with the autograph ticket, if you wanted an 8x10 signed. They were only $6 each, but still, having to buy some of those when I thought they would automatically be included was disappointing. I mostly bought items from Creation's tables because only one other dealer was selling items I am intertetsed in, which is autographs of course. From Creations' table for $20 each I bought signed 8x10s of Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Ted Raimi, Emilie de Ravin and Mira Furlan. My dad later bought in the auction that day another Emilie de Ravin signed photo along with a Jorge Garcia photo for $20. This is my advice to anyone attending another Creation event where they have auctions: Wait until the last day to buy items from their tables because you can easily get the items a lot cheaper during the auction and they never sell anything over retail value from their tables in the auctions. This was our first Creation event, so we learned now.
Saturday: This was a very busy day because of both John Rhys-Davies and Sean Astin attending. John Rhys-Davies hosted a talk for an hour, which was very entertaining. Sean Astin then had a talk after John for another hour, although I found this one less entertaining because he basically said the same things he did at GenCon Indy in 2003, compared to John who was also at that convention. Sean did say he is going to be on the new season of 24, so watch for that. After Sean's talk, both signed autographs for two hours. The autographs were done by row and since we paid for the most expensive ticket package, we were ahead of people who paid for general admission. Everyone was able to get Sean to sign in that time period, but we did not get John in the two hours. He takes an extremely long time to sign because he always wants to talk to each person in line as they come up to him. John had to leave for a charity auction/ late lunch event that he was hosting for an hour and then he came back to sign for everyine else after that event.
Unfortunately, Sean had to catch a plane, so we were rushed through his line and he could not personalize any items. With the autographs, Sean Astin signed two autographs for me in less ten seconds. All he said was "Hi!" and then moved on. He actually signed his full name on the Fan Club magazine my dad was having him sign for me, which was a nice surprise because his autograph is short compared to how it use to be. In total, Sean signed a photo, Fan Club magazine and a photo of him and I from GenCon for me and an item for a friend. John Rhys-Davies is a fantastic guy and he surprisingly recognized my dad and I! When we approached him his eyes kind of lit up and you could honestly tell that he knew he had met us. When he asked where, we said GenCon and that sparked his memory. He signed a Treebeard toy, a Gimli photo, a photo of him and I from GenCon and a photo of him and my dad from GenCon. It was kind of funny, he said that he looked sad in the photo of him and I, so he scribbled a beard around his face on the picture to make himself look a little better!
One of my best purchases was on Saturday. During the hour where John went to the charity event, Creation held their daily auction and since almost everyone left after getting their number in line for John Rhys-Davies, there were only about 10 people bidding. For $60 I ended up winning a matted 8x10 signed photo of Orlando Bloom from Pirates Of The Caribbean! It is his OB signature, but it is still nice and I believe Creation is very trustworthy because of all the shows and events they have done. There is a charity sticker on the back of the photo from a foundation, so that is also a possibility as to how they got it. I am not sure if people were discouraged bidding on it because of it being matted? When I got back to the Disney hotel we were staying at, I took out the matted piece from the frame that came with it and found out that it was only lightly taped onto the matted piece on the back corners. I was able to remove the tape without ripping or damaging the photo and now it is just an 8x10 instead of about a 16x20 size. Too bad it was not of Legolas though! I also bought a few unsigned LOST photos from Creation for $6 each.
Sunday: The big day was here beacuse of Elijah Wood. There was not much going on earlier in the day until 2:40 when Elijah was having his photo op. $70 was very expensive just to get your picture taken with a person, but who knows when I will ever meet Elijah again, so my dad and I decided to do it. My dad and I usually just went to the Disney parks on the morning of the show dates, so it did not bother me going there a little later. My dad and I figured that the photo ops would be done by number kind of like how everything else was that weekend. Unfortunately for us, this time it wasn't. We ended up being at least 200 people back in line when our number on the ticket was 38, but we still go through in about an hour. I had to lean over in the photo with Elijah because he is so short compared to me. After that, another auction was held, but this time the audience was jammed pack because everyone was waiting for Elijah Wood's talk after the auction. I am so glad I got the Orlando picture the day before because it would have easily sold for $200 on Sunday. Poeple were bidding insane amounts on some items. A Karl Urban signed photo for almost $150 and a Viggo signed photo for almost $200? Come on people! Other huge items that sold were an Abbey Road reenactment of the four main hobbits, which was signed by all four and matted sold for $550 and about a 16x20 size Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp signed and matted Pirates Of The Caribbean photo sold for $540 (I believe).
Anyways, Elijah Wood's talk was very funny. After he came out he said that he wanted to call up Dominic Monaghan. So he took out his cell phone and actually called him up and Dominic actually answered! Elijah then had the phone put on speaker phone and then had it connected into the sound system so everyone could hear them. Plus Dominic could also hear the crowd now too. He talked to Dominic for a couple of minutes and then he called up Billy Boyd and Billy also surprisngly answered! He was originally suppose to be at this convention, but cancelled along with John Noble, so it was nice that he actually talked with Elijah for a few minutes. That was probably the highlight of the talk and it was nice, although people ask the dumbest questions to each of the guests. After the talk, Elijah signed autographs. Elijah also just said "Hi!" and then signed because they were trying to get us through the line as quickly as possible. In total he signed 11 items for my dad and I with three of those items being for friends. For us he signed a Frodo photo, a Sin City poster (I brought it in case nobody had his Sin City figure, which of course happened), a Sin City photo, two pages in a calendar (It is a Return Of The King special calendar that was only given to movie theaters in Canada and it is already signed by Sean Astin and John Rhys-Davies from GenCon) a lithograph of the Fellowship (Already signed by Sean Astin and John Rhys-Davies at GenCon again), a Fan Club magazine and a Frodo figure. I am very happy that my dad attended this show because he was extremely helpful with getting items signed for me, so I did not have to do it all myself. Also on Sunday, I did buy from that other autograph dealer a Dwight Sin City photo signed by Clive Owen for $45 and a Geoffrey Holder signed Baron Samedi photo from Live And Let Die for $30. I asked on Friday how much the Clive autograph was selling for and they said it was $65, so I am glad I waited on buying it! I believe that this dealer's autographs are authentic because I actually looked through each autograph book they had sitting out and all of their autographs were spot on.
Overall, the show was nice, although I am not sure I will attend it again unless they had some more big names and more guests in general from the movies, not just "experts" besides the three main guests and Matt Appleton. Elijah was definitely the reason why we went, but I would like to see more guests in the future. $349 for three autographs and admission is insane, especially when you buy it twice. I guess I could have gone to an Emerlad Rose concert or the Desert Party, but I had no interest in that in all honesty. Plus I did not like paying $60 an autograph, especially for Sean and John when they were only charging $20 at GenCon. This really limited what every attendee could spend their money on because of the high autograph and photo ops tickets. Usually you can get three autographs for $60 at any other convention, not just one. They should also consider having 8x10s thrown in as part of the autograph ticket if you want an 8x10 signed because that is practically what every other convention does. It was still nice overall, but it would have been better if both Billy Boyd and John Noble would have attended. Thanks to anyone for taking the time to read this!
